Giraffe

  • This long-necked animal is the tallest animal on earth and one of the more efficient water users, as it gets most of the moisture it needs from the plants it eats.
  • Because of its long neck, drinking from a waterhole is rather challenging. It needs to bend down over 10 feet in order to drink and force the water up its neck, defying the principle of gravity.
  • Researchers found that the giraffe uses a system similar to a plunger pump to get the water up their long necks while they drink.  Therefore they only drink once a day.
