Ostrich

  • The ostrich is undoubtedly the largest bird in the world, growing up to 2.7m high, with the largest eggs in the world.  Ostrich eggs are strong enough so that a human can stand on top of them and they hold up to 1.25 litres of water.
  • No wonder that hunter-gatherers use ostrich eggs to store water for future use!
  • Ostriches are omnivores and do not need to drink water as they get all their moisture requirement from the plants that they eat, but they like drinking water when they come across a watering hole.
